With roughly a week left before everyone learns what the latest Intel® Core Ultra 200S Series Processors (and the Z890 LGA1851 motherboards) are capable of I decided to take a step back and test one of the latest Intel Z790 motherboards to hit the market. Yes, the unfortunate voltage issue of both the 13th and 14th Intel Core generations has been a rather significant problem but since not all batches have been affected by it (for example my i9-13900k test rig has been working fine since May last year) and also since new motherboards (and old due to microcode updates) are basically free of it (not to mention the number of people who own one such CPU) it's certainly worth testing new models. So as the review title clearly states I’m of course talking about the ASRock Phantom Gaming Z790I Lightning WiFi model which also happens to be the very first mini-ITX model I've reviewed in a very long time.

While the board boasts a powerful VRM capable of handling demanding processors like the Core i9-14900K and supports high-speed DDR5 memory, it does make some sacrifices in other areas. Lesser USB ports compared to the Z790 PG-ITX/TB4, the absence of WiFi 7, and PCIe Gen5 SSD support that is present on the newer Z790 chipset revision, which might be considerations for users looking to future-proof their build. The absence of the debug LED is probably the biggest issue for me because I consider that the bare minimum feature, even the most budget Z790 chipset motherboard right now. Despite these limitations, the Z790I Lightning WiFi remains a compelling choice for users, enthusiasts especially, that prioritizes affordability and strong CPU and memory performance in a compact ITX form factor. However, if the faster PCIe Gen5 SSD and WiFi 7, or even more expansion slots is what you need, the larger form factor mATX and ATX motherboard might be a better fit.

ASRock loves to be different with its offerings, aka the Aqua series of motherboards. Still, the Taichi Carrara is different in that it celebrates ASRock's 20th anniversary at the upper echelon of PC components and hardware. We take a closer look to see if the Z790 Taichi Carrara's premium standing in ASRock's Z790 line-up represents what we've come to like about the Taichi series over the years and, more importantly, how it performs against other LGA 1700 motherboards.

Being that this is our first Intel Z790 motherboard it was exciting to see what the platform offers and some of the new features you are going to get over the previous generation. Intel’s Z690 platform offered a lot, but the biggest change here is going to be PCI-Express 5.0 support on both your expansion slots as well as your M.2 storage. This really is going to future proof you when Gen5 NVMe storage becomes available, and affordable.

The ASRock Z790 Taichi is the highest model from ASRock’s Z790 family. The looks are excellent and should fit most of the builds. It has an integrated I/O shield, great RGB implementation (with three aRGB connectors and one RGB compliant), PCIe 5.0 compatibility, and PCIe 5.0 NVMe drive support (you can install one of them, plus four PCIe 4.0 drives, still with some limitations), and 8 SATA ports. The power/reset/clear CMOS buttons can also come in handy when overclocking. You get a 2.5 Gbe Ethernet and WiFi compatibility. ASRock Z790 Taichi has an excellent power delivery with 24+1+2 phase VRM with 105A MOSFETs, giving 2520A. That should be enough even for the 13900K and, most possibly, the upcoming new processors (Raptor-Lake refresh) for socket 1700. The power delivery section is cooled with massive radiators and one 30 mm fan, but the VRMs would be remarkable without its aid. You will get two Thunderbolt 4.0 ports – that’s a great addition. The audio performance is excellent because you get the ALC4082 (with assistance from an ESS SABRE9218 DAC for Front Panel Audio). There are eight fan headers – so you shouldn’t be disappointed in that department (and the location of the CPU fans headers is not odd like the last time). The price is relatively high (but that’s usually a norm for the DDR5-based Z790 motherboards). 479 USD is the high-end market, but the competition is usually more expensive. It’s 699 USD for the MSI MEG Z790 ACE or 630 USD for the Asus Maximus Z790 Hero.

When Intel launched the Z690 chipset supporting 12th Gen processors I had mixed feelings. Yes, it was the first platform to support DDR5 ram, and yes it did offer better performance over older generation of processors. But I just didn’t like the fact that if you had a 10th Gen or a 11th Gen processor and you want to upgrade to the 12th gen, you had to buy a complete new setup again, which means new motherboard, new cooler (due to the new LGA1700 socket) etc. I suppose if you go with Intel, you can’t get away from their Tick-Tock model.
