Kingston FURY Renegade G5 SSD, M.2

With the Renegade G5, Kingston expands their solid-state drive offerings to finally include PCI-Express 5.0. Their new drive is built using the Silicon Motion SM2508 controller, paired with Kioxia TLC NAND flash, which offers a better performance profile than the Micron TLC that we've seen on similar drives.

At COMPUTEX 2025, we’ve seen a lot of companies showing off their new PCIe Gen 5 SSD. Kingston, the well-regarded brand in the memory industry, is one of them. This is the Kingston Fury Renegade G5 SSD, a PCIe Gen 5 x4 SSD that claims to peak at 14.7GB/s read speed.

As consumer PCIe Gen5 SSDs become more common, users now have a few high-performance options to consider. Standing out requires a nice blend of speed, power efficiency, reliability, and pricing. Kingston’s FURY Renegade Gen5 enters this space with a somewhat balanced approach, though from a value-for-performance standpoint, the Kingston FURY Renegade G5 positions itself as a higher-cost alternative. It is priced at over $600 for the 4TB capacity vs. $550 for the SanDisk SN8100 and $389 for the Crucial T705 (as of the publishing of this review).

The FURY Renegade G5 is Kingston’s very first Gen5 M.2 NVMe SSD and all I can say is it was well worth the wait.

If you are a user who demands the absolute best performance from your system for professional content creation, enthusiast-level gaming, AI workloads, or anything else you can throw at it, then the Kingston FURY is ticking all the right boxes. Its exceptional speeds and responsiveness, coupled with its impressive thermal performance, make it a strong contender in the extremely competitive high-end SSD market. While the cost will be a factor for many, the performance gains offered by this drive are likely to be well worth the investment for those who can truly leverage its capabilities.

The Kingston FURY Renegade G5 is an absolute powerhouse of an SSD, designed for the high-end user. If you have a modern PC equipped with a PCIe 5.0 motherboard and are looking for the absolute fastest sequential performance, combined with massive capacity options up to 8TB, this drive is a no-brainer purchase. For those who demand the best for content creation, faster gaming, or intense workloads such as AI, the Renegade G5 is an outstanding choice that will future-proof your storage, albeit I suspect the 8TB version may be out of many people’s price range.
