The Kingston NV1 SSD we reviewed earlier in the year was fairly received in our region thanks to it decent overall performance and very accessible price but from a technical standpoint, it was product that was intended to hit a certain performance target with varying NAND+Controller combinations. This is still apparently Kingston’s strategy with the newer Kingston NV2 available in mixed NAND+controller combos but this time around, it will target a higher performance bracket. It will also be marketed as a Gen4 SSD but as the performance ratings indicate, its more for show. Regardless, the Kingston NV2 is looking to bump up performance on the entry-level market with this new release and with pricing remaining relatively close, Kingston may be looking to to get more of these out in the wild.

The Kingston NV1 SSD was one of the best-value PCIe Gen 3 SSDs due to its impressive price-to-performance ratio and build quality. Continuing the NV1’s legacy is an updated PCIe Gen 4 SSD model released last September 2022, the Kingston NV2 series. With capacities ranging from 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB, the new Kingston NV2 SSD is an affordable PCIe Gen 4 SSD without the premium costs associated with the latest protocol. Kingston have launched their new NV2 “entry level” range of NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD’s that outpace traditional solid state drives thanks to the PCI Express 4.0 architecture with read speeds of up to 3500MB/s and write times of 2800MB/s that doesn’t hurt the wallet. This compact single-sided M.2 2280 (22 x 80mm with a weight of 7 grams) boasts a small form factor and is available in four sizes, 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB (reviewed).

The Kingston NV2 NVMe Drive is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a secondary drive when paired with a faster drive as primary.

The Kingston NV2 is a direct update of the NV1 series of SSDs. I say it is a properly instated one, featuring a familiar price point but with the extra speed attached.

Being an entry-level SSD, the Kingston NV2 range was launched in September 2022, with only a brief press release and little fanfare. This is in stark contrast to most high-end NVMe SSD releases, but not surprising considering the NV2’s budget nature. It uses Phison’s new PS5021-E21 controller with four flash channels, designed for DRAM-less operation, along with what we believe are TLC NAND memory chips (more on this later).

The 2TB Kingston NV2 is a dirt cheap NVMe SSD and not much more. Performance is fairly bad, the drive runs hot, and you cannot be certain of the hardware. It makes for a cheap secondary drive but is not ideal for laptops or for use as a primary drive.
