The power supply is often a PC component that gets little attention, but it is extremely important, because without a good power supply a stable system is unthinkable! With the SP750 Gold SFX power supply, Lian Li offers a powerful SFX PSU for high performance gaming PCs in compact Mini-ITX and Mini ATX cases. The Lian Li SP750 is a welcome comeback for this firm to the power supply market, and it does it in the SFX format this time. Helly Technology's platform was a success, as was the company's platform. The brushed aluminum enclosure and sleeved module cables add to the overall aesthetics of the device. The internals appears to be in good condition. A 5-year warranty is provided with the item. It's an 80 Plus Gold certified power supply, which is a common choice for, let's say, mid-tier systems (or even higher) from the consumer's perspective (in terms of efficiency versus the cost of the unit). The 750 W option should be sufficient for the vast majority of customers who just have a single graphics card in their system. In practice, even a configuration such as the one utilized in this test (i9 10850K + Geforce RTX 2080 Ti) seldom draws more than 400 W of electricity in total.

In today’s review we are having a look at Lian Li’s first PSU, the SP750. Against all odds, Lian Li’s first diversification attempt comes with a very powerful 750W SFX unit rated at 80 Plus Gold, mainly designed for compact high-performance gaming systems.

This is the first SFX platform from Helly Technology I have seen, and I am impressed. With some changes, this platform has the potential to face off against Great Wall's excellent SFX design used by the Corsair SF Platinum and Gold models. For starters, I would suggest providing inrush current protection, which won't affect performance, but will increase production cost, and tune the EMI filter to lower EMI emissions. The hold-up time should be close to or above 17 ms, but there is no space to install bulk capacitors large enough in such small units with increased power output, so users should be willing to compromise in this regard. Even Corsair's top SF750 Platinum cannot exceed 12 ms hold-up time.

When it comes to SFX power supplies, the general ethos you tend to expect is that some compromises have had to be made in the design to ensure everything can fit neatly within such a small package. Make no bones about it though, while the Lian Li SP750 might be small, it offers a level of performance that not only makes it stand out in the SFX market but also blows the vast majority of fully-sized ‘standard’ PSUs right out of the water. As can be seen in our testing, the Lian Li SP750 rarely skipped a beat and in specific regards to the efficiency performance, successfully punched colossally above its weight.

The Lian Li SP850 PSU was released before the mass adoption of the 12+4 pin PCIe connector, offering a 12 pin connector, lacking the extra sideband signals which are required by the NVIDIA RTX 4000 series graphics cards. Nonetheless, it is fully compatible with the previous NVIDIA RTX 3000 generation and the upcoming AMD GPUs, which will use 6+2 PCIe.

We’re putting the new Lian Li SP850 power supply on our test bench today. The company is mainly known for making chassis, like the O11 series (with ones like the Dynamic, Mini, or the recently checked Evo), the AIO coolers named Gallahad, RGB PSU extension cables (Strimer, which already has the 2nd version), and fans from the Unifan series. They even made a gamer’s desk DK05-F. It is another/higher-wattage version of the SP power supply series. We already checked the SP750, which we checked almost a year ago, and it earned an “Approved” award.

Lian Li has taken it upon itself to develop a modern, powerful PC power supply in small form factor format, which should fully meet today’s standards and customer requirements. The result is a fully modular 850 Watt SFX PC power supply with 80 Plus Gold certification and 12-pin high-power connector according to PCIe 5.0 standard. On paper, this reads excellent, but how the small power dwarf performs in practice will be revealed in the following review here on OCinside.de!

In regards to if you should buy the Lian Li SP850, the better question is are you planning on building an SFX system? – Yes, a rather obvious point, but if you’re not, then you’re clearly better off looking elsewhere. We said at the start of the review that SFX power supplies are, compared to standard models, quite limited and the clear reason for that is because MATX/mid-tower cases and builds are far more common.

The Lian Li SP850 is an amazing little PSU that delivers full 850W power to the most demanding configurations. It’s perfect for small, but also large PC builds where stability is the most important. Since there are barely any SFX PSUs on the market that offer such a high wattage and a great design, it’s hard not to recommend the SP850 from Lian Li.

Like I mentioned at the start of our look at the Lian Li SP850, this isn’t testing the power that it is producing, I would still recommend checking out a review that has that. Today we are just checking out some of the features of the SP850 and Lian Li did a good job of making their new 850-watt SPX power supply stand out. The SP850 is available in black and white but I don’t think it is possible for the black model to look as good as this bright white is looking. Lian Li paired the white aluminum housing up with silver/grey for labels and the logo on the side which goes well with the white. All of the cables are bright white including the plastic connections, and even the power plugs in the PSU itself for the modular cables. Add to that the individually sleeved cables for the traditional PCIe cables, 24-pin, and both of the CPU power and you have a good looking PSU without the need to add in cable extensions or custom cables. Most of the cables are shorter which goes well with the SFX size though the two CPU power cables may have a little too much length on them for smaller cases. Lian Li has also included a new PCIe 5 power cable which has the small compact 12-pin plug on the video card end to provide up to 600 watts without having to run three different power cables to one video card which should clean things up.
