The Synology DS224+ is a cool little NAS that does everything expected of it. The new release is $110 more than the Synology DS223j, but considering its raw performance is a lot better, the increase in cost is justified.

The Synology DS2422+ is the company’s newest high-performance DiskStation designed for small and medium-sized businesses. Packed with 12 drive bays and powered by the powerful DSM OS and app platform, Synology indicates that it’s best suited for those looking to store large amounts of data and to easily share their content in a multi-user environment. It will also excel in high-quality video editing and VM storage use cases. You can further increase its capacity and scalability to 24-bays via the company’s DX1222 expansion unit.

There are not many NAS servers with dimensions as compact as the DS620slim, so the competition is thin. QNAP offers the high-end TVS-882ST3, mid-range TS-451S, and more budget-friendly TS-453B. However, I never had the opportunity to evaluate any of those, so I can't compare them properly with Synology's offer. I will also use SSD drives (thanks to the kind sponsorship from ADATA) instead of the slow HDDs I have been using so far from now on, which means I will lose fewer hours to testing, especially to the currently very lengthy RAID synchronization and build times.

The Synology DS923+ is a flexible NAS that offers a range of features for data sharing, synchronization, backup, and surveillance. DSM and the deep application library continue to be the best Synology benefits. They’ve also made progress with this unit to unlock the benefits of flash, but the execution is incomplete. 10GbE should arguably be onboard as well, but to be fair, Synology is balancing price/performance in this unit. Still, the DS923+ is a modest progression and will solve a lot of SMB problems.

To summarize, the Synology DS723+ is certainly powerful for a 2-bay NAS with future storage expandability. While it is a controversial decision to go with Ryzen Embedded R1600, I am sure 90% of the time, business users will not feel any difference since they require a NAS mainly for shared storage and backup solution. I think it is an excellent NAS for a home or small business that requires a centralised and self-managed storage system. Looking at the bright side, the AMD CPU allows faster Networking and ECC memory support that is beneficial to business users.

The DS1522+ is a follow-up to the DS1520+ and another addition to Synology’s Plus series of SMB/SOHO NAS solutions. Like its predecessor, the 5-bay DiskStation is outfitted with dual M.2 SSD caching bays to add quite a bit of performance flexibility, which was certainly established during our benchmarking. This time around, however, it features an AMD Ryzen R1600 CPU (compared to the last gen’s Intel Celeron J4124 4-core), up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM, dual DX517 expansion bays supports (to scale as your business grows), and four 1GbE ports. Like all Synology devices, the DS15222+ is powered by DiskStation Manager (DSM), the company’s comprehensive NAS OS that features a vast range of multimedia and file management applications.

Die Synology DS920+ setzt mit dem Intel Celeron J4125 auf Gemini Lake Refresh. Zudem bietet sie zwei M.2-Steckplätze für einen NVMe-SSD-Cache, um die I/O-Leistung zu erhöhen, und zwei LAN-Anschlüsse mit Link Aggregation. Ihr einziges Problem: Die DS918+ kann all das auch schon.

This entire review might seem like a scattered brainfart of highlights about the Synology DiskStation DS920+. And I sort of agree – it’s difficult to review a NAS that can do so much. The DiskStation Manager also involves a lot of technical know-how which is already made as simple as possible but if you bought the Synology DiskStation DS920+, then I assume that you aren’t a beginner in the world of computers.

The Synology DS920+ is a mid-tiered NAS, which means its price tag is quite stiff. At $570, I am sure many of you will wonder whether it is worth spending so much on a branded NAS as opposed to building a system for use as a NAS with more powerful hardware for less. Well, the reason behind the high price is the excellent DiskStation Manager operating system, as well as other software Synology developed for this product. If you are an advanced user and don't have time to build a new system, which involves trying out various packages that promise the same functionality, you can try this alternative. But if you don't have the necessary skills, the obvious choice is to buy a NAS from such a well-established brand as Synology to have it working as you require in a matter of minutes.

Bottom line: Synology's DS920+ is a minor refresh of a tried-and-trusted product and lacks the high-speed connectivity needed to make it a compelling upgrade.

The Synology DS1520+ is a capable NAS for small offices or enthusiast users who need lots of storage space and the option to upgrade it further should if necessary. It uses the same CPU as the DS720+ and DS920+, but has more RAM, which can be expanded further by replacing the single DIMM with one of higher capacity. It also has four Gigabit Ethernet ports for faster network transfers if combined. Much better would have been 2.5 Gbit ports, and while none are available, the option to upgrade to 10 Gbit through a spare PCIe slot would have been better yet. The two NVMe slots, on the other hand, offer a great way to boost performance, especially IOPS.

The DS720+ is a fine NAS box that’s a delight to use. It has plenty of power, and Synology DSM is still the most sophisticated and best supported NAS operating systems available. But, the multiple personality disorder of offering NVMe drive caching on a NAS box with only dual 1GbE LAN ports to send and receive data is patently perverse. While the DS720+ is undoubtedly better than the DS718+, compared to the cheaper four-bay QNAP TS-431P3 that includes a 2.5GbE port, choosing this is a struggle unless you intend to ultimately extend using the DX517 box. And, if you have that plan in mind, then you might as well go with the DS1520+, get more internal drives and much greater network bandwidth when it is required. I fear that in an attempt to refresh this line without disturbing the existing product balance that Synology might have outmanoeuvred itself, and not for the first time. But, if you want a small two-bay NAS with plenty of internal power and expansion possibilities, the DS720+ is an exciting option.

This affordable DiskStation is highlighted supports up to two DX517 expansion units, which increases the number of available drive bays to 16 for a maximum capacity of 108TB. Other hardware features include an AMD Ryzen V1500B 4-core 64-bit CPU at 2.2 GHz, up to 32GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM (standard models ship with 4GB), dual M.2 2280 NVMe SSD bays for caching, and four 1GbE ports.

The DS2419+ is not for everyone because of its vast storage capacity and the fact that it costs a bomb. $1500 puts it into the business-oriented product stack where reliability and features come first and cost is not as important a factor as it would be to home users. The DS2419+ currently costs $550 more than the DS1819+, so someone could wonder what this large price difference covers. Besides four more drive bays, you get a stronger power supply for support of up to twelve drives in total. Synology also threw a server-grade line filter into the bundle, which will effectively protect your NAS from EMI noise. Those are the main differences, and they don't seem enough to justify the $550 gap between these products. The DS2419+ should have a lower price tag, with $1200 sounding more reasonable.

Synology has refreshed its Plus Series NAS solutions for 2020 with incremental upgrades it hopes will lure new customers looking to take their first steps into network-attached storage. DS220+, at £330, represents the most affordable route into the Plus Series range and promises high performance in a compact form factor aimed at home enthusiasts and small businesses. Armed with evolutionary upgrades, the 2020 model touts a faster Intel Celeron processor and DDR4 memory, which when allied to the fan-favourite DiskStation Manager operating system makes for a nippy and intuitive NAS experience. The foundations are solid, however Synology's hesitance in rolling out faster networking standards prevents the DS220+ and others in the range from reaching their full potential. As much as we appreciate the DSM experience, the absence of 2.5GbE is a misstep at this price point, and one that may prevent existing Synology users from feeling the need to upgrade. Bottom line: the DS220+ is a safe addition to Synology's portfolio, but a 2.5GbE upgrade must surely be on the horizon.

We are hard pressed to find anything to fault with the DS1618+, in fact we could only come up with just one. The DS1618+ lacks built-in multi-gigabit capability, though for business networks four-port link aggregation will sidestep this limitation. One of the major advantages Synology offers over competing NAS vendors is its Btrfs solution. In conjunction with RAID parity Btrfs will not only detect data corruption but automatically repair the file, thereby providing a much needed safeguard for ensuring the integrity of long term storage of your data. IronWolf Health Management integration can add yet another layer of protection for data stored on the NAS. The Security Advisor makes securing the NAS easy for small businesses and home users, though the DS1618+ offers plenty of advanced security tools sysadmins look for too. Whether the priority is data reliability or data security Synology has positioned the DS1618+ to deliver both in spades with almost any hardware configuration possible to meet any need, and as such is worthy of our Editor’s Choice award.
