Toshiba N300 NAS Systems HDD

Mit der N300 NAS Systems bietet Speicherspezialist Toshiba eine umfangreiche Festplatten-Familie auf CMR-Technik (Conventional Magnetic Recording) an, die speziell für den 24/7-Dauerlauf konzipiert wurde. Laut Hersteller decken die Drives alle Anforderungen von 1- bis 8-Bay-NAS-Systemen oder auch Desktop-RAIDs und Multimedia-Servern ab und kommen mit Kapazitäten von bis zu 16 TB zum Kunden. Rotational Vibration (RV)-Sensoren sorgen dabei für einen störungsfreien und stabilen Betrieb. Dank Heliumfüllung sind außerdem niedrige Geräuschentwicklung und Leistungsaufnahme garantiert. In Kombination mit Workloads von bis zu 180 TB/Jahr sowie einer Garantiezeit von drei Jahren soll die N300 eine hohe Zuverlässigkeit gewährleisten.

Toshibas aktuelles NAS-Flaggschiff N300, 16 TB, darf in unserem Artikel um die Spitzenposition der maximalen Transferrate antreten und beweisen, ob an den erfolgreichen Test der N300 12TB angeknüpft werden kann. Mit 7.200 rpm und CMR-Aufnahmemethode besitzt die Helium-befüllte Festplatte alle Grundeigenschaften für ein gutes Ergebnis. The newer SKUs of the N300 4TB drives do come with 256MB of cache (such as our sample) and coupled with a better hardware revision / newer firmware version the drive can deliver considerably better performance. The sequential read/write speeds are now higher with around 30MB/s, the drive featuring low noise during normal operation, but is no match in this regard for the helium-filled models which start from capacities of 12TB, that being a completely different price range! In no way is an HDD anno 2019 rather appealing anymore, but in a NAS unit it can make a lot of sense for backups and large file storage centralized in that small little home server of yours. Really the N300 hardly excels in anything as it shows almost 10 Watt power consumption when used, 7 Watts in idle. Read-write performance for an HDD is good as long as these are big files. The unit also runs a bit warm. What Toshiba does right is the pricing, at 3 cents per GB it is still 3x cheaper than the cheapest SSD will offer. So yes, in a desktop PC combined with an SSD this can make could make sense at 10 Cents per GB, or of course, house it inside what it was released, into a NAS. One advise I like to gove Toshiba though, the three-year warranty really should be 5 years to make these units more competitive towards NAND storage. The bottom line is that Toshiba proofs today that there is good reason for the HDD to be around if you're looking for massive storage at a far more affordable price per GB ratio. And for an HDD at 3 cents per GB that goes a long way, keep in mind that Toshiba also offers a volume size of 12 and 14TB.
