Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X, M.2

With what I call the second generation of Gen4 NVMe solid state drives we’ve had a lot of entries in the space already and it does seem that Western Digital is a little late to the party with the WD Black SN850X, but if you haven’t picked up a Gen4 drive yet this drive I would say was worth the wait. When it comes to pure raw performance this drive us up there with all of the latest Gen4 drives that we’ve tested, but never took the top spot in any of our speed tests. In CrystalDiskMark we saw a read speed of 6970.12 MB/s and a write speed of 6689.79 MB/s,

The WD Black SN850X is a powerful, high-end PCIe 4.0 SSD that's near the top of the heap in almost every category. The SN850X is available in high capacities and has an optional RGB-laden heatsink for most models, but pricing and the questionable Game Mode 2.0 keep it from being the very best.

Today we are looking at WD’s relatively new SN850X. This Black-line drive is the successor to WD’s Black SN850 which we have previously covered. The original WD Black SN850 was part of the second wave of PCIe Gen 4 drives, and as such was one of the first drives to really push the limits of what a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface can handle. The SN850X is here to follow up, offering relatively similar specs but with an updated set of internal components. Also, for brevity, I will be referring to this drive as simply the SN850X rather than the WD Black SN850X for most of this review, just because that is a bit long-winded.

The 8TB WD Black SN850X is the best 8TB SSD on the market with good all-around performance and no scary surprises, but it costs a lot. If you don't need a single-stick 8TB drive, using two 4TB drives saves money.

It's by far the highest performing 8TB retail SSD we've encountered to date. It's the New King of High Capacity.

The latest member of WD's Black product line of Gen 4 SSDs is the new SN850X, a successor to the popular Black SN850 that launched a couple of years ago. The new drive uses 112-layer NAND and an updated controller. WD sent us the Heatsink version of the drive, which also features RGB lighting.
