Western Digital WD Gold KRYZ HDD

Als erste 24-TB-Speicherplatz fassende Festplatte schauen wir uns heute die Western Digital Gold, 24 TB, WD241KRYZ an. Mit dieser Speicherkapazität auf gerade mal 10 Plattern konnte Western Digital die Dichte auf den Plattern nochmal deutlich erhöhen. In November 2023, WD introduced the 24TB Gold Enterprise HDD, offering a 2TB increase over its preceding 22TB model. While this update might seem modest, it represents a significant enhancement in storage capacity, particularly impacting storage density in large NAS and server configurations. Following our initial HL15 review, where we put fifteen WD Gold 24TB drives to the test, we’re now ready to revisit these drives in a standard 8-drive NAS system setup.

This new drive in the WD Gold HDD lineup comes without a real performance hit and adds 2TB over the previous largest drive. The WD Gold HDDs bring over double the MTBF that the WD Red NAS drives have with 2.5 Million hours compared to 1 Million hours on the Reds. This increase does make sense for an Enterprise or Datacenter drive over a typical NAS drive. An interesting aspect of the 24TB Gold, is it takes .3w less power while in use and .2w less while idling than the 22TB variant, while also tacking on a few extra MB/s in best-case throughput. The extra 2TB does bring an $80 price increase over the 22TB variant, but volume buyers probably won’t see much difference at all.

Continuing on with our WD Gold 22TB SMB performance series, we will look at how these enterprise-grade drives fare when populated inside the QNAP TVS-h1288X. In our last review, we were impressed with the results when combining the 22TB WD drives with the Synology DiskStation DS1821+. Configurations like these will certainly give businesses more flexibility in available storage and performance, as well as a smaller footprint to boot. We expect more of the same when using the TVS-h1288X.

The WD Gold 22TB is a great addition to the company’s already extensive enterprise hard drive lineup, offering the industry’s highest areal density at 2.2TB per platter (alongside the WD Red for NAS solutions and WD Purple for surveillance setups). The extra 2TB in capacity over the 20TB HDDs certainly adds up if you’re using pallet-fulls of these drives in your data center.
