AMD Ryzen 5 9600X, 6C/12T, 3.90-5.40GHz, tray

We recently published our reviews of the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X processors powered by the Zen 5 architecture. These new chips offer contemporary levels of performance in their market segments, and are highly efficient, thanks to AMD building them on the low-power 4 nm TSMC N4P process, to the extent that AMD rated them with 65 W TDP. AMD advertised a roughly 16% IPC increase for Zen 5 over the previous Zen 4 architecture, and while we are fully aware that IPC doesn't linearly scale with gaming performance, we were a bit surprised to find that the 9700X and 9600X are no more than 3% faster than their predecessors in the most CPU-bottlenecked 720p gaming benchmarks.

Over the years AMD has consistently delivered groundbreaking advancements that set new industry standards. The latest in their lineup, the AMD Ryzen 9700X and 9600X CPUs, powered by the cutting-edge Zen 5 architecture, are no exception. These processors are engineered to provide unparalleled performance, enhanced energy efficiency, and exceptional scalability, making them a formidable choice for both enthusiasts and professionals.

This year at Computex AMD announced the next generation of their Ryzen CPU lineup, the 9000 series which is built on the Zen 5 microarchitecture. They announced four different CPUs, The Ryzen 5 9600X with 6 cores, the Ryzen 7 9700X with 8 cores, and then two Ryzen 9 CPUs, the 9900X with 12 cores and the 9950X with 16 cores. AMD was originally launching these at the end of July but they did push things slightly with the 9600X and 9700X hitting stores on the 8th and the 9900X and 9950X hitting stores on the 15th. So today I will be checking out the Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X to see what they are all about ahead of that store launch. Let’s dive in!

These chips drop into the same socket AM5 as AMD's previous generation, but with higher performance and better power efficiency, along with a slight price reduction that sweetens the deal. Here's a full suite of benchmark and performance characteristic

AMD Ryzen 5 9600X is the latest kid on the block, and the most affordable ticket to the Ryzen 9000 series Granite Ridge desktop processor family powered by the new Zen 5 architecture. The processor is targeted at the upper mid-range, with enough processing muscle on offer for a feature-packed gaming PC build. This processor can be paired with even a high-end graphics card, and play at the highest resolutions, with no noticeable performance drops compared to processors from a higher segment. It's only when you combine gaming with streaming and video effects and overlays on the side like some of the popular streamer-creators do, that you might miss having more cores. AMD is positioning the Ryzen 5 9600X against its main rival from the Intel camp, the Core i5-14600K.

For those using an older Zen 3 processor and ready to switch to DDR5 memory, upgrading to the Ryzen 9000 series can be advantageous. The new Curve Shaper feature enables enhanced performance tuning, making the upgrade worthwhile. Ultimately, your current setup and specific performance needs will guide your decision. The newer AMD 800 series chipset, designed for Ryzen 9000 CPUs, offers better performance and features. However, the value of this upgrade depends on the pricing of both new and previous-generation motherboards set by manufacturers. Upgrading to the Ryzen 9000 series can be a wise decision based on your specific needs. The Ryzen 7 9700X, for example, offers better performance, lower TDP, and reduced load temperatures compared to the Ryzen 7 7700X. Although the initial performance gains might not be as substantial as expected, the processor’s improved power efficiency suggests potential for enhanced performance over time. New BIOS updates from motherboard manufacturers for existing AMD 600 series chipsets could further improve performance, making the upgrade more beneficial in the long run. With an MSRP of $359, the Ryzen 7 9700X is $50 cheaper than the Ryzen 7 7700X at launch. Although it isn’t the most budget-friendly option, its performance is still impressive. Additionally, with Intel facing stability issues with its 13th and 14th generation processors, many renowned reviewers and enthusiasts are currently advising against those Intel CPUs. This controversy also gives AMD a competitive edge, making the Ryzen 7 9700X an even more appealing choice for those seeking reliable and efficient performance.
