Es fällt zunehmend schwerer, bestimmte Punkte eines Modells der GeForce-RTX-3000-Serie herauszustellen. Wir können aber aus Erfahrung ableiten, dass die Founders Edition ein gutes Grundniveau bieten wird – sowohl in der Leistung, wie auch der Kühlung. Die Boardpartner müssen sich also in diesen und anderen Punkten versuchen abzusetzen. Die MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio 24G bietet auf dem Papier eine höhere Leistung als die Founders Edition, die wir uns leider noch immer nicht anschauen konnten. Im Vergleich zu den bisherigen Testkandidaten liegt die MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio 24G unterhalb der Top-Modelle aus dem Hause ASUS und EVGA und kämpft meist mit dem Gaming-Modell von Gigabyte. Die Konkurrenz aus dem Hause INNO3D lässt man meist aber hinter sich. Aber auch wenn man im Diagramm nun bestimmte Modelle oberhalb und unterhalb zuordnen kann: Wir reden hier von geringen Abständen in der Leistung – meist im niedrigen, einstelligen Prozentbereich. Natürlich können die Abstände auch etwas größer sein und wenn es nur auf die Leistung ankommt, ist eben das schnellste Modell und dessen Leistung entscheidend. Beim Stromverbrauch liegt die GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio etwas über dem erwarteten Niveau und bei diesen Modellen sprechen wir meist von 400 W oder leicht darunter. Einen Verbrauch von 400 W für eine Grafikkarte muss man sich immer wieder vor Augen führen, zum Normalzustand wird das hoffentlich nicht werden. » zur Galerie Ebenfalls keinerlei Probleme sehen wir bei den Temperaturen, wenngleich diese unter Last gerne etwas niedriger ausfallen dürften. 75 °C sind in der Praxis aber kein Problem. Punkten kann die Karte vor allem bei der Lautstärke. 38,1 dB(A) sind unter Last ein sehr gutes Ergebnis und damit ist sie die leiseste Variante der GeForce RTX 3090 welches wir bisher testen konnten. Der semipassive Betrieb funktioniert reibungslos, ist allerdings längst kein Alleinstellungsmerkmal mehr. Probleme mit der Wärmeentwicklung der Speicherchips auf der Rückseite sehen wir nicht. MSI verbaut hier aber auch Heatpipes, um die Wärmeabfuhr zu unterstützen. Mit zusätzlicher Ausstattung hält sich MSI bei der GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio 24G dann doch noch etwas zurück. Es gibt kein Dual-BIOS, keine Spannungsmesspunkte und auch keine zusätzlichen Temperatursensoren. Die RGB-Beleuchtung auf der Stirnseite gefällt in der Form sicherlich nicht jedem. Zurückhaltend und eleganter sind die Leuchtstreifen auf der Frontseite der Karte. Im Lieferumfang der Karte befindet sich ein Stabilisierungsarm, der am Gehäuse und der Karte befestigt werden kann, um die schwere Karte etwas abzustützen. Preislich liegt die GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio 24G aktuell bei 1.709 Euro. Die geringe Last-Lautstärke dürfte das Hauptargument für die Karte sein. Ob sie damit den Preis auch rechtfertigen kann, steht auf einem anderen Blatt.

Making sense of a £1,680 graphics card is nigh on impossible for us mere mortals. Most readers will assume, as we do, that anyone with an ounce of common sense will shun the range-topping RTX 3090 for a second-rung RTX 3080 that's plenty fast for gaming while costing half as much. We, clearly, aren't the target market. For the enthusiast refusing to accept second best, RTX 3090 represents an undisputed king. Nvidia's flagship chip offers the best performance that PC gaming has to offer, and with the Ampere architecture married to a huge 24GB pool of GDDR6X memory, there's a large slice of future proofing and genuine attraction for creative types inclined to render by day and game by night. Tapping into those credentials, MSI's Gaming X Trio is the fastest implementation of RTX 3090 that we've tested to date, and the cooler's capabilities are accentuated by the fact that the quickest partner card also happens to be the quietest. It is built like a tank and priced accordingly, but an ongoing lack of availability continues to dampen the card's appeal, and the longer the wait goes on, the closer we get to AMD's reveal of Big Navi. Bottom line: MSI's RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio is the fastest graphics card in our charts and, if you can find one, a fine fit for a no-holds-barred gaming rig.

Nvidia has pulled a big card out of their hat with the RTX 3090, but it is eerily reminiscent of AMD’s RDNA. They took a node shrink from 12 nm to 8 nm, which according to them, gives nearly twice the performance per watt and pushed it as far as it can go. Out of the box, they didn’t leave any headroom for overclocking, and luckily this sample didn’t require a special power adapter. Next up, we have the price, which in all honesty, is far beyond the reach of many people for an upgrade to their gaming rig. The Nvidia FE has an MSRP of $1500 USD. We don’t have the suggested pricing for the MSI RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio, but typically AIB cards such as this list for a premium due to improved PCB, power, and cooling. Overall, Nvidia has set the bar very high for AMD. The RTX 3090 is one heck of a GPU with exceptional performance. Even with the upcoming launch of RDNA2, I believe Nvidia can rest easy. Judging by the “leaks” we have seen, it doesn’t appear that AMD will take the performance crown this time around unless they have been holding something tight to their chest, but that seems unlikely. Aside from price and power usage, if we base this purely on the performance, we can easily give the RTX 3090 the Overclockers stamp of approval!

It is nothing short from impressive as to what MSI brings to the table. First things first, the product is factory tweaked close to max performance already for you. So there is only a little oomph little left to gain with overclocking. Next to that, the acoustics as low as this card offers once again astound me. I mean this is the most tropical running card ever for a consumer, and certainly the hottest for the Ampere series with that wattage. Yet still, you sit at 33 maybe 34 DBa at best for acoustics. There is of course a tradeoff, it will run in a 75 Degrees C domain, but that is still perfectly fine. You need quite a system to tame thus beast though, you have a spicy processor that can keep up with the card, you need lovely GPU bound games preferably with DX12 ASYNC compute, and of course, if you are not gaming at the very last in Ultra HD, then why even bother right? The flipside of the coin is that when you have these three factors applied and in effect, well then there is no card faster than the 3090. Of course, there is an energy consumption factor to weigh in as a negative factor, and yes, there's pricing to consider. Both are far too high for the product to make any real sense. For gaming, we do not feel the 3090 makes substantial enough difference over the RTX 3080, and that's mainly due to system bottlenecks really. You need to game at Ultra HD and beyond for this card to make a bit of sense. We also recognize that the two factors do not need to make sense for quite a bunch of you as the product sits in a very extreme niche. But I stated enough about that. I like this chunk of hardware sitting inside a PC though, as no matter how you look at it, it is a majestic product. Please make sure you have plenty of ventilation though as the RTX 3090 will dump lots of heat. It is big but still looks terrific. And the performance, oh man ... that performance, it is all good all the way as long as you uphold my three musketeers remark. Where I could nag a little about the 10GB VRAM on the GeForce RTX 3080, we can not complain even the slightest bit about the whopping big mac feature of the 3090, 24 GB of the fastest GDDR6X your money can get you, take that Flight Sim 2020! This is an Ultra HD card, in that domain, it shines whether that is using shading (regular rendered games) or when using Hybrid Raytracing + DLSS. It's a purebred but unfortunately very power-hungry product that will reach only a select group of people. But it is formidable if you apply and give it the right circumstances. It is very hard for us to recommend a product like this for many reasons that would not make sense. You will be better off with GeForce RTX 3070 or 3080 as money wise this doesn't make much sense? But these puppies will sell regardlessly just because people can and will buy them for that x-factor. The Gaming X TRI leaves is in awe, it's a beautifully designed product with a beefy cooling and dreamy acoustics. For those that can and are will to spend the dough on, this has to be a top pick.

Whilst the Gigabyte went for a great cooler but an otherwise no-frills approach with the RTX 3090, the Gaming X Trio is pretty famous already thanks to its exploits as an RTX 3080 variant, and indeed when we looked at the RTX 3080 version last week. It's much more like the type of graphics card that one would expect in modern times. Firstly the Tri Frozr 2 cooler shroud has a decent amount of RGB lighting onboard, for those of you who like the inside of your case to be visible from space. There is also a pretty good factory overclock, and if that isn't enough, then the MSI Afterburner overclocking software is available and has quickly become the industry standard overclocking tool. Again we need to mention that currently overclocking an Ampere card leads to lots of instability in popular gaming titles, but again, you probably don't need to overclock something like this that can run F1 2020 in 8K at over 60FPS. Even if you're going for low detail, high frame rate gaming in Fortnite or whatever is the current/next hot thing, this can handle it. Additionally, MSI has supplied the Gaming X Trio with plenty of power potential thanks to the 8+8+8 PCIe power inputs so those of you with a tendency to push for world records won't have any issues either. On the subject of the cooler MSI's Frozr range has always been excellent and it continues to do sterling work here with the RTX 3090. It's quiet and, best of all, keeps the card cool. It's common to get one or the other, but both together and of such high quality is a bit rarer to find. The performance was also consistently a handful of frames ahead of the Gigabyte card, so if absolute performance is your watchword, then it's the one to go for, even if the price of the MSI RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio is a hair higher. What doesn't help matters is it looks exactly the same as the 3080 version, there's nothing to set them apart, and we feel like for a card that carries so much extra cost over the 3080 it needed to feel that bit more special. If you don't care about how things look then ignore us, but if you want the absolute best and that's what the 3090 is meant to be about we have a sneaking suspicion you'll understand where we are coming from. £1529 is a lot of money made even worse by the fact that for £759 which is less than half the price you could have a card that looks exactly the same. Whether you need one is up for debate, but if you do get one, then you have what is right now the highest performing graphics card on the planet.

Obviously, the flagship of the Nvidia range doesn’t come cheap. It’s fairly clear to me that the performance difference isn’t about gaming. There are more cores, and it does run faster, but it’s not as far ahead from the RTX 3080 as the RTX 2080 Ti was from the RTX 2080. The performance difference is marginal in some benchmarks due to it being CPU limited. It sounds silly, even with us using some of the latest processors here, that I don’t think we’re getting everything we can from the RTX 3090 cards. There’s clear CPU limiting in some of the gaming benchmarks. That being said, hitting the limit on these new GPUs still results in record breaking performance, so I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. So what are they for? Well, as Andy was saying in the video review, content creation and heavy workstation tasks. They’re marketed as gaming cards too, which is fine, I’m sure the deep pocketed enthusiast market will love them. However, while it’s an expensive “gaming” card it’s half the price of the Titan RTX, and offers some pretty significant performance in Specviewperf, V-Ray, Blender and more. Furthermore, that wealth of VRAM is insane. For game development and 3D rendering, having all that memory is going to be vital to creating truly next-gen content experiences.
