overclockersclub.com: Mushkin GAMMA 2TB M.2 SSD Review (translate)Are you ready for some pavement shredding speed? Well, hold on because Mushkin has a new NVMe SSD that is making some waves. First, let me put the speeds in perspective. If you are old enough to remember a time when your desktop was tied to the good old mechanical 3.5" IDE hard drive, you remember how slow and clunky it was. Laptops were no better with their often slower and clunkier 2.5" mechanical hard drives. Then 2.5" Solid State Drives (SSD) started popping up, offering SATA III speeds you could only dream of in the (at the time) blistering 550MB/s range and this was a true game-changer. Fast forward a few years and we have the curious but now familiar M.2 interface. The M.2 was formerly known as the Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF) and the intention was to replace the mSATA interface. While the M.2 socket can be SATA or NVMe (Non-volatile Memory Express), NVMe is by far the fastest. And of course, M.2 SATA drives and M.2 NVMe drives are not interchangeable. M.2 SSDs are becoming the standard as pricing slowly comes down and capacity and speeds go up. This is certainly a huge plus for laptops where every bit of space and weight are critical. So today the pole position is easily taken by NVMe SSDs that can pump out speeds in the face-melting read/write range of 7.1GBs/6.6GB/s. Yes - you read that right. Today we have the GAMMA NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD from Mushkin that claims those very speeds - can it deliver? Let's find out!

As you saw in the test results the drive easily reaches read speeds of 7000MB/s. This is an insane transfer speed with out any outside controller. This is all packed into a small M.2. I was extremely satisfied to only see a max temp of 55 degrees Celsius while running all these test back to back. This was recorded utilizing the heatsink from the motherboard. This is probably going to be the most common way all of will install this drive

Mushkin’s GAMMA drive fits right in with all of the other top-tier Gen4 solid state drives on the market right now. Offering some of the fastest speeds we’ve seen in a solid state drive! In CrystalDiskMark we saw speeds of 7017.47 MB/s read and 6722.91 MB/s write. Likewise in ATTO we saw max speeds of 6650 MB/s read and 6310 MB/s write. These scores are very impressive and definitely an improvement over the first round of Gen4 drives that we saw which basically maxed out around 5000 MB/s. This performance has a lot to do with the Phison PS5018-E18 controller which is going to be used a lot over the next couple of years. Now we did notice some thermal throttling on this drive. The drive does not come with any type of cooling so we tested it as such. While most of our tests ran fine in ATTO Disk Benchmark we noticed about 50% through the test the drive performance started to fall off. We then re-tested with the M.2 heatsink and the results were more on-par with the advertised speeds. It is safe to say that most people will have M.2 heatsinks on their motherboard, but if you don’t you’ll likely run into throttling issues on longer writes with this drive. With no software, no cooling solution and minimal packaging Mushkin is able to offer the GAMMA at a pretty aggressive price. Right now the 2TB version is selling at our favorite online retailer for $389.99, which is $70 cheaper than the Patriot Viper VP4300. Mushkin is also backing the drive with a 5-year warranty. I think that if you don’t really need software or included cooling this is a great drive. Overall ThinkComputers gives the Mushkin GAMMA 2TB Gen4 Solid State Drive a 9 out of 10 score.
